Private Thyroid and Neck Ultrasound Scan

Private Thyroid and Neck Ultrasound Scan

£95.00

Thyroid Ultrasound examination is a non-invasive imaging method used to visualise the Thyroid gland, along with adjacent structures in the neck.

The Thyroid Gland is one of the body's endocrine glands that regulated metabolism and is located towards the front of the neck just above the level of the collar bones, in the shape of a butterfly with one wing (lobe) each side of the neck connected by a narrow band (the isthmus).

Assesses

  • Swelling of the salivary glands
  • Check the appearance of thyroid nodule
  • Lumps arising from the neck
  • Signs of lymphadenopathy
  • History of thyroid problems

Thyroid ultrasound is particularly useful for diagnosing suspected thyroid disease. The ultrasound examination can be performed to look at palpable or visible "lumps", or any suspected enlargement of the gland found during a clinical examination. The ultrasound can establish if any nodule is inside the thyroid gland or outside it and whether it is a cyst or a soft tissue nodule. Cysts are almost always non cancerous (benign), although in some cases the fluid may be taken out by a needle under ultrasound guidance for additional testing.

In addition, Ultrasound can be used to assess focal or diffuse enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter) and to identify extra-tyroid nodules or masses, and to monitor the size of known masses.

FAQ's

What preparation is required for a Thyroid or Neck Ultrasound scan?

Because of the superficial nature of the Thyroid Gland, it is very easily visualised by Ultrasound and no specific preparation is required prior to the scan. Clothing with a loose-fitting neck is advisable.

What will happen during the examination?

The procedure is non-invasive and painless. You will be asked to lie on your back on the examination couch and expose your neck. Our highly qualified and experienced Sonographer will move a transducer lubricated with warm gel over the front of your neck to obtain the necessary images. You are welcome to ask questions during your examination. You may bring someone into the examination room with you if you wish (no children please), and a HealthCare Assistant will also be on hand should you require support or a chaperone.

Will I be given a record of the Ultrasound examination?

Following your scan, we shall provide you with an Examination Report, together with a memory stick or CD containing selecting images and possibly video recordings of the scan. The images can be printed off or saved on a home pc. We do not offer thermal prints of the examination as these are invariably of low quality and will degrade over time. By providing digital images, you can print off as many copies as you like, save them for posterity in digital format and send copies to any future medical professional.
