Private Ultrasound - Abdomen

Private Ultrasound - Abdomen

The highly experienced Sonographers working with Beehive Solutions provide a Private (fee paying) Ultrasound service for those persons requiring either a "Well Person" scan to confirm ongoing good health, or a targeted examination of a particular organ/system to identify, monitor, exclude or review suspected pathology.

Right Kidney as seen on Ultrasound Examination

Ultrasound imaging is particularly valuable in the examination of the organs of the abdomen and is often used as a first line of investigation in a wide variety of clinical conditions, including:

  • Abdominal or flank pain.
  • Suspected Gall Stones
  • Urinary problems
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Liver disease

Abdominal ultrasound is extremely good at visualising the main abdominal organs and may be used to assess their size, shape and internal structure. It enables an experience Sonographer to detect solid or cystic masses; including  malignant and benign tumours, abscesses, fluid collection and inflammation within the abdomen, as well as calculi in the Kidneys, Ureters and Gall Bladder.

Abdominal Aorta and Aneurysm?

If you only need us to examine the Aorta - to diagnose or monitor an aneurysm for instance, see our dedicated Aorta Private Scan page.

What preparation is required for an Abdominal Ultrasound scan?

In general, any examination of your upper abdomen will require you to refrain from eating or drinking for a few hours prior to your appointment. This will allow us to better visualise the Gall Bladder and Biliary tract. If the urinary system is of particularly interest, then we may ask you to drink a pint of water in the hour before your examination, so that you attend with a full bladder. If the examination is limited to looking for an Aortic Aneurysm, then no preparation is required, although fizzy drinks should be avoided for 6 hours prior to the examination as bowel gas causes serious issues in getting good visualisation of deep structures, such as the Aorta.

What will happen during the examination?

The procedure is non-invasive and painless. You will be asked to lie on your back on the examination couch and expose your abdomen. Our highly qualified and experienced Sonographer will move a transducer lubricated with warm gel over your abdomen to obtain the necessary images. You are welcome to ask questions during your examination. You may bring someone into the examination room with you if you wish (no children please), and a HealthCare Assistant will also be on hand should you require support or a chaperone.

Will I be given a record of the Ultrasound examination?

Following your scan, we shall provide you with an Examination Report, together with a memory stick or CD containing selecting images and possibly video recordings of the scan. The images can be printed off or saved on a home pc. We do not offer thermal prints of the examination as these are invariably of low quality and will degrade over time. By providing digital images, you can print off as many copies as you like, save them for posterity in digital format and send copies to any future medical professional.
